Aquaculture can help us transform our food systems and tackle the effects of biodiversity loss and climate change. But we need to make sure we develop the sector sustainably. This global roadmap sets out four pathways for the responsible development of aquaculture. It aims to help the aquaculture sector create the conditions to produce healthy, nutritious and accessible blue foods that benefit people and the planet. The recommendations outlined in this roadmap require collaborative action in aquaculture across geographies and sectors to achieve greater social, economic and environmental benefits by 2030. Scroll down for our summary roadmap and key actions or download the full roadmap.
The Global Sustainable Aquaculture Roadmap was produced by the Blue Food Partnership's Sustainable Aquaculture Working Group, led by Friends of Ocean Action, a platform of the World Economic Forum, with generous support from the UK's Blue Planet Fund.
CloseImprove aquaculture production to make it more sustainable
Responsible Production
Boost livelihoods and the working environment for people and communities
Better Livelihoods
Provide consumers with access to responsible and healthy farmed blue food choices
Healthy Consumption
Equip the aquaculture sector for a changing world
Enabling environment
Improve aquaculture production to make it more sustainable
With growing demand for blue food, the sector needs to put the planet first and ensure that we can sustain the long-term production of nutritious and healthy food. We need to focus on enhancing nature-positive outcomes and contribute to the world’s net-zero transition.
Set your ambition
Adopt responsible production practices that mitigate climate and biodiversity risks in the growth of aquaculture
Make it happen
Aquaculture producers need to implement improvement programs that aim to improve feed, diversify the number of species, reduce waste and water usage, and decrease GHG emissions. These programs need to operate across all products, regions and large and small-scale actors.
Set your ambition
Develop innovative solutions that address the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss in aquaculture production
Make it happen
Aquaculture producers and enablers in the sector must develop and adopt climate smart innovations in production that address major environmental challenges and sustainably amplify growth in aquaculture.
Boost livelihoods and the working environment for people and communities
There is an imbalance among those participating in the aquaculture sector. The people working across the value chain, as well as the communities impacted by the industry, are often left out of decisions which can negatively affect their lives and wellbeing. With the growth of aquaculture comes livelihood opportunities, but more needs to be done to get us there in a responsible way. We need systemic change to rebalance inequalities, improve working conditions and build a more just sector for work in aquaculture.
Set your ambition
Improve benefits to small-scale actors and their communities in the aquaculture sector
Make it happen
There is much to do here, especially for major companies along the aquaculture value chain. They must include small-scale actors in industry decision-making forums, provide them with opportunities for broader value chain integration with greater access to market, and contribute to community development in areas where they operate through corporate responsibility and sustainability programs.
Set your ambition
Adopt policies and practices that focus on decent work for all and inclusive growth in aquaculture
Make it happen
Companies along the aquaculture value chain need to facilitate wide-spread adoption of industry guidelines that protect employees rights as well as promote inclusion and safety in the workplace. Such measures ultimately lead to inclusive growth throughout the sector.
Provide consumers with access to responsible and healthy farmed blue foods choices
Around the world, access to nutritious and healthy blue foods varies. A pivotal part of building a sustainable aquaculture sector is improving the availability, access and affordability of blue foods to all consumers. Advocates in this sector need to raise awareness, among retailers, distributors, and food service providers about the benefits of a variety of blue foods. Businesses need to find solutions that allow all consumers to access the health benefits of nutritious blue foods.
Set your ambition
Facilitate better access to a diversity of farmed blue foods by retailers, distributors, and food service providers
Make it happen
Advocates in the aquaculture sector need to guide retailers, distributors, and food service providers in diversifying their sourcing to include a greater variety of farmed blue foods. As a result, they would benefit from the expansion of their markets, while consumers would have greater access to a range of food options.
Set your ambition
Raise consumer awareness about the health benefits of blue foods to increase demand
Make it happen
Advocates in the aquaculture sector should engage consumers about the variety and advantages of blue foods, working with influencers such as chefs and well-known institutions to deliver awareness-raising and marketing campaigns on affordable, nutritional products.
The future of our food, health and ecological systems are at risk. We need new partnerships, policies, and investments that enable sustainable aquaculture to grow and deliver greater social, economic and environmental benefits through the sustainable growth of aquaculture by 2030.
Equip the aquaculture sector for a changing world
Set your ambition
Improve data and knowledge sharing systems in the aquaculture sector which informs policies and builds investor confidence
Make it happen
To enable progress and build confidence in the aquaculture sector, we need private and public partners to consistently report on sustainability indicators, and develop more transparency policies around the quality, efficiency and application of data in aquaculture systems.
Set your ambition
Ensure aquaculture is integrated in policies and investments related to food security, climate change and biodiversity issues
Make it happen
To achieve this, industry, government, and civil society actors in the aquaculture sector must facilitate participatory and adaptive multi-stakeholder partnerships that generate action plans - from the local to the global - which lead to policies and investments that enable the systemic change of the sector for the better.
